I know plenty of fans who enjoy the Harvest Moon video game series. You follow a character who needs to take over a farm and run it well. Growing crops, raising livestock, getting married and generally integrating with the townsfolk. This game series has opened the path for new RPGs that don’t always require fighting and special magical abilities.

Enter the concept for Wild Season and you may find yourself excited again. The game is based on the idea found in Harvest Moon, but it goes deeper into more mature topics. This doesn’t mean you’re seeing nudity but the cutscenes and villagers are created in a more mature fashion.

It’s being produced by Quickfire Games and has been gaining support among the community. The whole point of the game is to be a successful farmer, but much like Harvest Moon you can also get married and raise a family on your new plot of land. You can actually get married to the same gender, which has never been allowed in the more politically-correct Harvest Moon titles.

The storyline drops you into a town which is apparently hiding some dark secret. The suspicion will lead players around by the nose, curious to figure out what is really going on. You can already tell that there are some very mature overtones in this game. Nothing that would corrupt a child’s innocence, but it is definitely not Harvest Moon for so many reasons.

Here is a brief rundown of some features copied from the Kickstarter page:

  • Play as a male or female character
  • 8 Bachelors and/or bachelorettes for you to woo, romance and marry
  • Same sex relationships
  • Cooking and baking to create unique recipes.
  • Grow crops, raise animals, and sell their produce
  • Animals List: Cows, Sheep, Goats, Chickens, Ostriches, Penguins, Llama, Horses & dogs
  • Multiple story-lines, relationships and choices for you to explore
  • Make choices that change the world around you. Even make your way into the town council and make decisions about where to take your town

So far the developers have noted that all screenshots are not necessarily the final graphics. There are touch-ups to be made following the farm map and the village itself. Villagers may get an overhaul on their detailed portrait pictures, along with their overworld sprites. But even the current screenshots look pretty good to this old-school fan of Harvest Moon.

The initial launch has been focused on computer releases for PC/Mac/Linux, along with mobile Android and iOS games. If the Kickstarter is successful the team may attempt to release Wild Season for home consoles and other portable devices.
