Where are Beavis and Butt-head’s parents anyways? It seems like these two teenagers have been left to fend for themselves managing only with jobs at a fast food restaurant. But aside from this curious paradox it sure did make a hilarious cartoon series.

In the season 4 episode “Safe Driving” there is a scene where Mr. Buzzcut is asking to see everybody’s permission slips. The class at Highland High School is going through some driving classes and they need parent’s permission first. Well for some reason these guys still got into the class even after showing their… credentials.

I have always loved this scene because it is one of those obscure jokes Beavis & Butt-head are so famous for. The guys even needed to dig out their birth certificates as a proof of identify. Butt-head’s paperwork does look okay – ignoring the “Mrs. Butthead” signature.

Beavis is a different story with both documents appearing clearly forged. In fact neither of the papers look anything like the original documents. Should we make a quick list?

  • Permission is spelled “permishun”
  • Certificate is spelled “certfxrite”
  • No signature, just the letters OK
  • No writing, mostly scribbles and torn edges

Oh and if you notice on the Birth Certificate, he wrote way too big and the letters end up cascading down the side of the page. Seems legit.

The scene itself only lasts about 30 seconds and Mr. Buzzcut doesn’t seem to have a problem with these documents. It is really a strange peek into the lives of Beavis & Butt-head. Considering we never get to see their parents the show does leave a pretty quizzical notion about what happened to them. It also raises a question of why they both don’t have parents… unless they are in fact brothers? Or perhaps adopted as foster-brothers?

When you start examining Beavis and Butt-head closely you end up recognizing these more subtle jokes. Although the show does not air much on TV anymore, these 2 kids are among the most recognized cartoon icons which came out of the 1990s.

This info is touched on in the movie when they meet what we are lead to believe is their fathers. Their dads were roadies for Montly Crue. Meaning their moms were groupies. Leading us to believe that the reason the moms were gone all the time was because they were busy chasing bands or whatever.

You can see the scene here:
